Barcelona considers re-signing Lionel Messi in 2023

Reports suggest that Barcelona would consider re-signing Lionel Messi on a free transfer in 2023 if he decides against penning a new contract at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Messi left Barcelona on a free transfer last summer due to the club’s financial problems, ultimately signing a two-year deal with PSG.

Messi’s time at PSG

Lionel Messi finished the 2021-22 season with 11 goals and 14 assists in 34 appearances in all competitions, but he only scored six times in Ligue 1 and faced criticism for his performances. Despite this, Messi has confirmed that he will remain with PSG next season. His contract is due to expire in June 2023, with the option of a further 12 months.

Barcelona’s interest in Lionel Messi

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has been asked about Messi’s potential return to Camp Nou, to which he replied that the club would have liked Lionel Messi to stay but could not afford it due to La Liga’s Financial Fair Play rules and PSG’s offers. According to ESPN, Barcelona “would find it hard to say no” to re-signing Messi on a free transfer next summer, with head coach Xavi having a big say in the decision.

Other potential suitors for Messi

The report also claims that a move to the Premier League is an option for Messi, with Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Newcastle United all capable of signing him. Meanwhile, a return to Newell’s Old Boys or a switch to the MLS are also allegedly options for Messi in the latter stages of his career.

Messi’s desire to return to Barcelona

Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, expressed his hope that his son would return to Barcelona before the end of his career. The Argentine won 10 La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey crowns, and four Champions League trophies during his highly-successful period at Camp Nou.
